Not withstanding political asylum seekers, diaspora groups often provide sentiments about their countries of origin from a standpoint of time and space; the context of emotions and understanding that was true to them in that pocket of time during which they left. That’s not to say that their opinions are wholly wrong or right, but that they most often feed into one small piece of a much larger mind or context of that country. 1 piece that makes up the whole.
Framing Diaspora Ideas in the Media
While Nelson Mandela represents peace, justice & reconciliation in many minds today, the picture that was painted of him during Apartheid South Africa was something very different. That of a ‘terrorist’. And since most Global North States at the time supported, aligned or acquiesced with the then SA administration, Mandela & his cause, was perceived as wrong & dangerous. The United States for instance placed him on a terrorist watch list until few days before his 90th birthday. Exactly around this time in 2008 was when the designation was finally removed. Yesterday (28th June 2024) marks the 70th anniversary of the 5 principles of peaceful co-existence, the essence of which has largely shaped how the Global South interacts diplomatically with the rest of the world, even in times of extreme tension. . . The long forgotten roots of these principles find their footing in the relations between India & China - who, during a period marked by the end of the Second World War, the decolonisation struggle & the complexities of the Cold War, showed the world the values that both countries believed could pave the way to a stable global order. . . It would become the bedrock upon which the Non Aligned Movement would be built. In many aspects, despite the generalised narrative, both countries, and many more of the Global South, continue to hold fast to these principles, despite the mounting external pressures, to 'pick a side.'
